My Overall Rating:

Available on Amazon here.
The portable breathalyzer and alcohol tester market has plenty of products, but very few measure up to the standards of the BACtrack s80 pro. As the name suggests it is indeed a professional breathalyzer that quickly estimates blood alcohol content (BAC).

The S80 utilizes fuel cell technology which ensures accurate readouts at high blood-alcohol concentrations compared to semiconductor models. It also employs temperature-checking, user-adjustable warning levels and an interior miniature air pump to precisely collect breath samples. All of this translates into very accurate readings. The sensor life as compared to semiconductor-based breathalyzers requires less frequent service and maintenance as well.

This alcohol breath tester has several features that mark it as a reliable way to measure blood alcohol levels, including:

  • A four digit display that allows for increased accuracy that can be read at a single glance.
  • Single button operation lets you test rapidly and easily, without having to fumble with complex controls.
  • Accuracy and monitoring features such as user-defined warning levels, an internal pump to capture breath samples quickly, and integrated temperature monitoring.
  • Mouthpieces that are wrapped individually that not only provide safety for the user, but also ensure that results are on point for every sample taken.

This is one of the few portable breathalyzer products that has not only been approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation for law enforcement use, but also by the Food and Drug Administration for personal use. This alcohol breath tester has met the rigorous standards of law enforcement, medical, and treatment professionals nationwide, since it provides fuel cell accuracy that not all breathalyzers deliver.

If you’re looking for a truly professional grade device then this breathalyzer is one of the most highly rated and well praised models available – I rate it highly due to its extremely high accuracy and most of all its consistently reliable and long lasting. It will serve citizens just as well as it serves police and medical professionals. If you want to buy it you can get it here for the best price at Amazon.

Perhaps nobody can state the excellence better than one of the current owners who writes in a review that:

This is the first breathalyzer he has had that will give the same readings across multiple testings, unlike other breathalyzers where readings are all over the charts. Additionally, the device has a long lifetime, giving over 1500 uses for just two AA batteries. This means that customers are not likely to run out of power when they need it most.

AlcoHAWK PT500 Alcohol Breathalyzer Review: Worth the price Tag?

By Kelly Williams

My Overall Rating:

The AlcoHAWK PT500 is a relatively recent professional grade alcohol breathalyzer detector in the AlcoHAWK Series line of breath alcohol testers. As a professional level model the price tag is higher – the question is if it is worth it. In my mind the answer is definitely yes. Let’s take a look why.

Click here to get the PT500 for cheapest price at Amazon.

One of the best things about this device is that it incorporates PT Core™ fuel-cell sensor.

This means that is superior to semi-conductor based technologies device in three ways:

  1. Accuracy: Enhanced linear accuracy over traditional semi-conductor sensors
  2. Fewer false alarms: Is not subject to interference from acetone and ketones. Basically acetone is one substance that can be falsely identified as ethyl alcohol by some breath machines. For example diabetics or people on low calorie fad diets can naturally have much higher acetone levels. The fuel-cell sensor technology means that it is are non-responsive to substances like acetone meaning no false alarms – one less thing to worry about!
  3. Robust: The sensor is designed to be more robust and last much longer.

OK so what else? Well the it also comes with Advanced Pressure Check Technology to ensure that the user blows with enough force to start a test and also ensures that they continue to blow through the unit throughout the entire test. All it really is just an upgraded re-brand of the FlowCheck technology the older models had like the Alcohawk Pro. It’s still a very useful feature though.

The back-lit LCD display is large and easy-to-read and the menu operation is very easy allowing you to quickly and accurately screen for the presence of alcohol up to 0.400% BAC. One nice feature is that you get an audible and visual warning when your BAC surpasses the adjustable BAC alarm point.

One point which is both good and bad is that one menu option allows you to set the “blow time” from 3 to 8 seconds but for some unknown reason it always resets to 5 seconds every time the unit is turned off and back on which is a little annoying.

A word of caution – if you don’t wait 20 minutes after last alcohol consumption it can cause the device not to work properly and you will have to send it in for re-calibration.

Let’s check out the features it has and what is included:

  • New PT Core Sensor
  • Advanced Pressure Check Technology
  • Features an
  • Product Dimensions: 6.3 x 8.6 x 1.8 inches
  • Shipping Weight: 0.8 ounces
  • Batteries: 2 AA batteries required – not included.
The Good
  • PT Core Sensor Technology helps eliminates false positives and improves accuracy
  • The sensor is designed to be more robust and last much longer.
  • Large, easy-to-read back-lit LCD display
  • Audible and visual warning when a subject’s BAC surpasses the adjustable BAC alarm point
The Bad
  • Blow time setting always resets which is a bit inconvenient.
  • Need to get it re-calibrated after about 200 uses
Who should get an AlcoHAWK PT500?
  • The PT500 model is among the alcohol tester detectors that are actually used by probation officers, law enforcement, clinics, boating, military, and many other areas of professional testing in which fuel-cell accuracy and reliability is required. This in itself speaks volumes as to its effectiveness and reliability.
  • It is of course a DOT / NHTSA Conforming Breath Alcohol Screener and has obtained FDA 510K Premarket Clearance so consumers are free to purchase it as well.

Overall, this is in my view one of the most accurate and dependable models on the market. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a professional grade alcohol detector that will consistently give reliable results as good as what police and many other professional employees use. It is slightly more expensive than some other models but luckily  the price has come down more recently so considering the quality it’s definitely worth the marginally higher price. If you want to buy the PT500 click here to get the best price from Amazon.

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

The Alcohawk PT500 alcohol tester is as good as a much larger machine costing twice as much. The accuracy is listed as .005 + or – at 05%. I would say it’s probably more like + or – .001. It quickly always gives the same values and maybe down .001 as the kidneys uses the alcohol. This machine is necessary if you drink and drive after wards. A wonderful machine.

My Overall Rating:

The newly redesigned AlcoHawk Pro digital alcohol breathalyzer is a professional grade detector actually rated as being one of the most accurate semiconductor-oxide technology alcohol testers on the market (sensor accuracy is ± 0.01% BAC at 0.10% BAC).

A welcome addition to this model that adds to the reliability of results is the newly added FlowCheck technology. This is basically an integrated airflow sensor that ensures a proper deep-lung air sample is obtained to improve the accuracy of the test. So if a person doesn’t blow enough air through the tester before displaying any results. If a person doesn’t blow enough air into the tester  the FlowCheck will show an error message and ask for a retest. This it improves consistency and  quality of results.

This breathalyzer is on sale on Amazon for nearly 35% off through this link right here.

This model (like the AlcoHAWK ABI) includes Sensor Recognition Technology to monitor certain types of abnormal sensor conditions.

It has the approvals you would expect for a professional grade alcohol breath tester i.e. DOT and NHTSA approved as an alcohol screening device and 510(k) certified by the U.S. FDA. As a testament to its reliability it is in fact used as an alcohol detector device by hospitals for emergency room care, schools, law enforcement for roadside testing and many professional organizations for employee screening.

One word of caution though – if you don’t wait 20 minutes after last alcohol consumption it can cause the device not to work properly and you will have to send it in for re-calibration  Even besides this it will need to be re-calibrated every six months or so otherwise the readings won’t be as reliable. It only costs around $20 and takes about a week but it can become a slight inconvenience to keep doing.

Check out the features and what is included:

  • FlowCheck technology for maximum accuracy
  • Single button operation
  • 5 Replaceable, hygienic mouthpiece provides a safe and sanitary method for testing multiple users.
  • Carrying case + zipper bag
  • Wrist strap
  • Battery
  • Car adapter
  • Instructions
  • One-year warranty
  • Product Dimensions: 5 x 1 x 2 inches ; 7 ounces
  • Shipping Weight: 14.4 ounces
The Good
  • Easy to use – simply insert mouthpiece and begin testing immediately.
  • The large, easy to read LED display is easy to view in low light situations.
  • FlowCheck technology ensures continuous deep lung air sample.
  • Compact, portable design – only 1″ thick!
  • Backed by warranty for one year
The Bad
  • Re-calibration can be somewhat inconvenient.
  • Start up time is 20 seconds

Overall it is a good semiconductor type breathalyzer and is a bit cheaper than others in the professional grade. Personally I’ve found the AlcoHawk Pro to be accurate (so long as you wait the minimum 20 minutes after last drinking as mentioned in the instructions). If you want to get one I recommend buying it from Amazon for the cheapest price here.

Let me show you what current owners have to say about it:

I have had this item for a few months now. My reason for getting it was to know what my BAC level is after having a few drinks out at dinner or where ever and driving home. The machine works well and appears to be accurate (when you use it a couple times all of the results are generally within .01 of each other).

The start up time is 20 seconds. To get an accurate reading you have to be able to blow out steadily for 5 seconds straight . A draw back is that you have to wait 20 minutes after the last sip of alcohol you drank to get an accurate reading.

It comes in a nice protective case with extra mouth covers. It also comes with a wrist strap, car adapter and a 9v battery. I am very happy with this so far. The cost is a bit high, but compared to the cost and hardship of a DUI, it is well worth it. I would recommend this to any one, especially a person that frequently goes out, has 2 or 3 drinks, and then has to drive after that.
